Staying Safe With Winter Running Tips

By Arthur Andrews

There are many ways to have a better winter running experience. If you are an avid runner, then you probably are not going to stop just because the weather is getting cooler. There are a few great winter running tips that can help you to more effectively and safely run during the winter months.

It is very important to use a little common sense when trying to run in cold weather. Protection for your hands, feet and ears are crucial when attempting to brave the cold. These parts of the body will become colder faster than any other part of your body. Keeping your feet warm and dry can help the runner from giving up the routine.

Although you are trying to keep warm and cozy, it is quite important not to over do it. Do not bundle up too much, this can cause more harm than good. Your body has to breathe in order to cool down and there are ways to becoming overly hot when doing physical exercises.

Even though the weather is chilly and you are not exercising in the sun, there is still a need to hydrate the body. Drink plenty of water when doing any kind of physical activity, whether the weather is hot or cold. This will help your muscles not cramp and will help nourish your body.

Controlling your breathing can also help you have a better running workout. Avoid breathing the cold, moist air into your mouth by breathing through your nose. A scarf can often help keep your throat from being directly hit with the cold air. Many times the cold air is the reason runners get sore throats in the winter.

It is never really a good idea to go running in the rain or heavy snow. It is nearly impossible to keep your feet dry and warm and have a successful run. When it is raining outside, it may be required that you postpone the run until it quits raining or by use of other means.

Joining a gym or purchasing a treadmill will allow you to do your daily routine of walking or running without having to fight the cold of winter or the heat of summer. For more information contact the local gym or sporting goods store. - 30552
