Some Helpful Winter Running Tips

By Arthur Andrews

There are many ways to have a better winter running experience. If you are an avid runner, then you probably are not going to stop just because the weather is getting cooler. There are a few great winter running tips that can help you to more effectively and safely run during the winter months.

The first thing to consider when running during the winter months is the fact that you should protect your body. Since it is cooler, you will need to be sure to stay warm to protect your body from the cold weather. Be sure to keep your extremities such as your hands and your feet warm. Wearing socks, comfortable gloves, ear muffs and toboggans are a great way to keep yourself warm.

While you are staying warm, do not let yourself get too warm. Your body needs to be able to breathe. Take the time to ensure that you are not dressing yourself too much. There is such a thing as overdressing when it comes to running in the winter.

Another thing to consider while you are running during the winter is the fact that you should always drink enough water. Just because it is cooler outside does not mean that you are at risk for becoming dehydrated. Drink plenty of water and always keep an extra bottle near you while you are running.

Another helpful tip is to be aware of your breathing when you are running. When you breathe out of your mouth and in through your nose, it will help keep sore throats at bay. A runner can easily catch a cold when they are breathing through their mouth, letting the cold, rigid air get to the inside of their mouth. It can be helpful to wear a scarf over the mouth and nose when running in the winter months.

It is never really a good idea to go running in the rain or heavy snow. It is nearly impossible to keep your feet dry and warm and have a successful run. When it is raining outside, it may be required that you postpone the run until it quits raining or by use of other means.

If you find that it is too cold or wet outside during the winter, you should consider running on a treadmill. This is a great way to keep up with your running without having to risk getting out and getting sick in the cold temperatures. Take these winter running tips with you the next time you go for a run. - 30552
