Some Helpful Winter Running Tips

Winter seems to be the season when most people pick up a few pounds. This is many because of a combination of things, the great food the holidays bring most people's activity level goes down. There are ways to keep in shape during the cold season. With a few winter running tips, it is possible to stay active when it gets cold outside.

The first thing to consider when running during the winter months is the fact that you should protect your body. Since it is cooler, you will need to be sure to stay warm to protect your body from the cold weather. Be sure to keep your extremities such as your hands and your feet warm. Wearing socks, comfortable gloves, ear muffs and toboggans are a great way to keep yourself warm.

It is also important to keep in mind that you are doing a physical exercise. It can be possible to become overheated if too many articles of clothing are used to keep you warm. Over heating is an invisible enemy to the runner in the colder months of the year. Many don't realize that is even possible to become overheated in the cold weather.

Another thing to consider while you are running during the winter is the fact that you should always drink enough water. Just because it is cooler outside does not mean that you are at risk for becoming dehydrated. Drink plenty of water and always keep an extra bottle near you while you are running.

Controlling your breathing can also help you have a better running workout. Avoid breathing the cold, moist air into your mouth by breathing through your nose. A scarf can often help keep your throat from being directly hit with the cold air. Many times the cold air is the reason runners get sore throats in the winter.

It is never really a good idea to go running in the rain or heavy snow. It is nearly impossible to keep your feet dry and warm and have a successful run. When it is raining outside, it may be required that you postpone the run until it quits raining or by use of other means.

If you find that it is too cold or wet outside during the winter, you should consider running on a treadmill. This is a great way to keep up with your running without having to risk getting out and getting sick in the cold temperatures.
