The Stopwatch Usage List

By Oliver Richard

Stopwatches have many uses with the primary function being to count time. You will most commonly see athletes, coaches and even whole athletic teams using them. There is more than one type of stopwatch and read on for more information.

Stopwatches are nothing other than hand held devices that clock time for various sports. This includes sports like track and field, swimming, car racing and other types of motor sports. However, stopwatches are also useful for evaluating times achieved when training.

Stopwatches are very handy for coaches that need to time the athlete's performance. To start timing an event, you simply push the button one time and when over you press it again. These are operated manually and used by coaches and trainers in their training and timing of the athlete's performance.

Stopwatches can be either analog or digital and it usually is similar to a regular pocket watch. However, there are also stopwatches that can be worn on the wrist. The large clocks used in sports arenas or stadiums, such as for hockey or basketball games, are known as stop clocks.

When it comes down to accuracy then the digital stopwatch is the one. The analog stopwatch is commonly used as a gift for either the coach or trainer when one kind or another sport championship has been won. It is an attractive gift designed in silver casings.

The basic analog stopwatch is still a useful little device for timing lap time, running time and countdowns. The features that are on the digital stopwatches are good should you require better accuracy for the use in laps and other activities but also over all sport evaluations.

Some models are capable of storing up to 50 lap times, whereas other stopwatches can only save up to 10. Some of the digital stopwatches also calculate the speed and time if you know what the distance of a lane or track is. All you have to do is enter the distance and the stopwatch will do the rest, like evaluating previous records for a particular athlete and then providing you with the average time in minutes or seconds that is taken to cover the entered distance.

Lastly, stopwatches are basically used as timers for a countdown. The watch will count down to zero after you have entered a specific time and pressed the start button. This makes them valuable to coaches, athletes and trainers when working out, because you will have the time needed for an exercise or can keep an eye on when the exercise has exceeded the warm-up period. - 30552
